KNIFE AMNESTY STARTS

A KNIFE amnesty started today. Weapons can be surrendered at police stations across the Sussex Police area.

Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Yeo said: 'We hope it will serve to reduce the availability of knives or other sharp bladed instruments of all descriptions, and ultimately spare innocent members of the public the trauma of being threatened with such a weapon.'

People in Sussex will be able to surrender weapons at all police stations without being prosecuted for illegal possession.

The amnesty will run until June 30.

Mr Yeo added: 'We are not complacent. This initiative is one of a range of measures we are taking to ensure that we keep a tight grip on knife crime so that Sussex remains a safe place in which to live.

'We do have a particular concern over people, often young men, who carry such weapons in public. Anyone carrying them faces the real possibility of being confronted by armed officers.'
