Knife-wielding robber who threatened Crowborough shopkeeper has been jailed

A man who threatened a Crowborough shopkeeper with a large knife before stealing more than £3,000 from the premises has been jailed for two years and three months.

Keenan Carmody, 22, unemployed, of Whitehill Close, Crowborough, appeared at Lewes Crown Court on Friday (July 1) and admitted robbery and possession of a knife.

The incident occurred shortly after 11.30am on Good Friday, March 25 when Carmody walked into the Poundfield Stores in Poundfield Road, Crowborough, to carry out the raid.

But despite removing outer clothing to try to change his appearance, Carmody was identified and arrested within 24 hours of the robbery taking place.

No-one was hurt in the incident and the stolen cash was recovered.

A witness took these photographs of Carmody leaving the scene, having removed a jacket that he had been wearing. He discarded the kitchen knife he had used to threaten the shopkeeper in a litter bin.

Detective Constable Dan Thompson, of Eastbourne CID, who helped investigate the robbery, welcomed Carmody’s custodial sentence.

He said, “I would like to praise the work of the Neighbourhood Response Team, in particular Uckfield’s E Team, who conducted the arrest the following morning.

“They recorded some key significant comments from Carmody and also managed to recover the discarded knife.”
