Labour loses Littlehampton county seat

LONG-STANDING Littlehampton Labour councillor George O'Neill lost his West Sussex County Council seat as the party's woes nationally hit home locally, too.

Mr O'Neill, leader of the county Labour group, lost out to Conservative David Britton in the Littlehampton Town division.

The Littlehampton East seat was held comfortably by sitting councillor, Liberal Democrate Dr James Walsh, while Nigel Peters retained the Arundel and Wick division for the Tories.

Deborah Urquhart held her Angmering and Findon seat for the Conservatives as did Peter Evans in East Preston and Ferring, while Graham Tyler kept the blue tide flowing with victory in Rustington.

Conservative Christina Freeman will also be returning to County Hall after victory in her Middleton seat, and Derek Whittington held his safe Fontwell seat in another Tory win.

With 58 of the 70 seats declared, the Conservatives already had a majority to secure another four years at the helm in West Sussex.

The Conservatives have 39 seats, the Liberal Democrats 17 and Labour two.
