Her son, Tom, is a serving Royal Marine, so the charity is one close to her heart.

Her appeal was launched at the charity coffee morning on February 9, where the guest speaker was the charity’s Chairman of Trustees, David Lilburn, MBE.

David served as a Royal Marine for 25 years, and as his father, grandfather and great grandfather also served in the same corps, the family can boast over 100 years of service.

In his presentation, he spoke of the charity’s work and how the funds raised are at present supporting 127 injured Royal Marines, from new recruits to WWII veterans, and their families.

The charity began three years ago and though small, has already raised over £210,000.

The charity runs a variety of events around the country and abroad, including a sleigh-pull from London to Brighton and a 50/50 YOMP from Brighton to Portsmouth, but is always looking for further ways in which to raise much-needed funds.

All the trustees are volunteers and 100% of the funds raised go directly to support those in need. For further information about the charity go to: www.helpourwounded.co.uk

David, who has written poetry for over 30 years, signed copies of his book, ‘Reflections of War’ where in the acknowledgements he gives a massive thank you to all Royal Marines, their families, and friends, and all serving military for giving him the inspiration to write on their behalf.

Ruth’s appeal got off to a flying start with a cake and home produce sale at the coffee morning raising nearly £280.

She has asked the lady members to set themselves a challenge during the year to support the charity; she has committed herself to take part in a 25km Thames Bridge Trek and one member, Margaret Brice, has already pledged to run three 10km races in one week.
