Lady Masons meet in new home

THE ladies of the recently reformed Sussex branch of the Freemasons met for the first time at their new home at the Masonic Temple in the High Street, Lewes.

Their male counterparts have taken the bold decision to allow the women hold their meetings at the 18th century building.

The Lewes branch of the Honourable Fraternity of Ancient Freemasons was forced to disband in March last year after rent increases forced them out of their former home in Hove Town Hall.

Fortunately the gentlemen of the Lewes Freemasons have broken with tradition and have agreed to hire out the temple women's group.

Christine Chapman, preceptor of the women's lodge, said: 'It's a lovely place which is steeped in history.

'We're very grateful to be given a second chance and we are pleased to be back.'

Fifteen ladies attended Wednesday's (February 6) meeting, including three new members.

The group hopes to boost its membership in the coming year and plans to hold an open day in August.
