Lancing's Karate Kid

A SCHOOLBOY who ranks among the top karate practitioners is hoping to compete on the other side of the world.

At 14 years of age, Josh Wheels, who attends Boundstone Community College, Lancing, is already a blue-belt in karate.

He was crowned a world champion in the under-14 category at the last world championships, held in Birmingham.

But the next championships will be held in Melbourne, Australia, and Josh is hoping to be there.

He said: "I have been doing it for just over two years.

"At the moment I do different classes. I do one in Lancing and I used to do one in Southwick.

"On Sundays, I do tournament training at The Triangle, at Burgess Hill."

Kind-hearted

Boundstone assistant head Dick Bryant said Josh was just a normal schoolboy who excelled in his field, but who didn't make sure everyone knew it.

"He is a kind-hearted youngster," said Mr Bryant.

"He is very unassuming. He doesn't boast and just gets on with things.

"He comes to school and is perfectly pleasant, to pupils and staff. And he's respected by both. That's the good thing.

"It's quite something, at his age."

Sponsorship

But like any young sportsman, competing across the country '“ and the world '“ doesn't come cheap.

Mr Bryant said: "We are looking for sponsorship.

"Just like any kid who wants to make it in something like this, he needs someone to back him."
