Landfill protesters keep up the fight

TWO objectives were paramount when Bexhill Against Landfill / Incineration staged a Spring Fair at St Martha's Hall, Little Common.

One was to raise money for a fighting fund so the group opposing use of the Turkey Road clay pits for landfill can have legal representation.

The second was to raise the group's public profile.

Everyone attending was given a copy of the six "bullet points" with which BALI is contesting the county council's "schedule of responses" to the inspector's report on the public hearing into the Waste Local Plan. BALI is encouraging the public to write opposing the plan to: Joint Waste Local Plan Team, Transport and Environment Department (WLP), FREEPOST (LW43), Lewes, East Sussex BN7 1BR and refer to Policy WLP10b.

Town MP Greg Barker, who opposes use of the brickworks site for waste landfill, was among the earliest supporters at the fair, which raised 1,109.

BALI secretary Iva Barnes said: "One of the reasons that we are desperate to raise money for a fighting fund is that Mountfield campaign was so successful and we hope to learn from them.

"They have been most helpful and given us a lot of advice including the name of their legal advisors.

"We are now engaging them to act for us but, sadly, it will cost a lot of money - at least 3,000 and probably more."

Aerial photographs of the Turkey Road site showing its proximity to housing and to Bexhill's Highwoods Site of Special Scientific Interest were on display as supporters sought bargains from stalls run by members and by other organisations which had taken stall space.
