'Lap-sonnets' for Valentine's Day

PETER Stringfellow and William Shakespeare are not often mentioned in the same breath but a charity event at the Lewes Arms on Valentine's Day will please fans of both camps.

Star-crossed lovers from Lewes and beyond will have the chance to woo their partners with one of the bard's sonnets in a fantastic fundraising event.

For just 5 they can utter the words or love or have it read live by one of the pub's skilled readers.

Or if they are feeling particularly racy they could pay another 5 for a special 'lap-sonnet' option available for just another 5!

Sarah Clowes, a co-organiser said: 'We have a few readers coming along, people with a literary background.

'I don't quite know how it warped into having the lap sonnets but it's going to be hilarious and people are making their own special outfits, so you'll have to come along to see it all.

'Someone has already come up with a Harveys sonnet, Miles Jenner (the joint managing director at Harveys) will be coming along, so I think we'll get him to perform it.

'People think we're completely mad but anything to do with the Lewes Arms is mad.

The cheeky event is in aid of the Sasha Roberts Scholarship Fund.

Sasha was a lecturer at Kent University and Lewes Arms regular and panto cast member who died in a road accident in September 2006.

Her son Lio was almost killed in the same accident but has made a miraculous recovery and celebrated his sixth birthday just before Christmas.

Sasha's family and husband Marin Spinelli set up the memorial fund to pay for a student to study Renaissance literature, the subject Sasha was researching.

If you would like to get involved]you can sign up at the bar of the Lewes Arms or call 01273 473152.

The object of your affection will receive the text of your chosen sonnet by post on Valentine's day and then hear it performed during the evening.
