THE DEADLINE for nominating young people for a special awards scheme who have triumphed in the face of adversity is drawing closer.

Nominations for the The Brian Smith Achievement Awards, run by Newhaven Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club, close on March 31.

The awards were set up in memory of one of the club’s past presidents, Brian Smith, who dedicated his life to supporting youngsters.

He was the head teacher at East Quinton School in Seaford, now Cuckmere House School, for 12 years.

Lion Derek McGarvie said; “The Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Lions Club is looking for boys and girls who have won through “against the odds”.

“For example, a young person who has overcome a serious illness or is exceptionally brave in spite of a disability or a young person who cares for a sick or disabled person and still fulfils their other commitments.”

Winners of the Brian Smith Achievement Award will each receive a cheque for £100 and a silver cup.

The young person nominated must live in the Seaford, Newhaven and Peacehaven or Telscombe Cliffs area and be no younger than six and no more than 17 on June 1, 2011.

If you know a young person worthy of this award send in your nominations by March 31 to Derek MacGarvie, youth officer, 1 Princes Close, Kingsmead, Seaford, East Sussex, BN25 2EW.

Included in the nominations should be the reasons for your choice and the young person’s name, date of birth, address and telephone number.
