The last chance to nose around Saltdean Lido will be on offer at a Heritage Beer and Wine Festival before it closes for restoration.

The fundraising event, featuring products from local breweries and vineyards, will take place tomorrow (Saturday June 7) from 11am to 4pm.

The lido is expected to reopen in 2016 with revamped and brand new facilities to attract visitors.

Rebecca Crook, from the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company, said: “The weekend is the commencement of a £5m refurbishment fundraising programme which will see the lido closed fully for 12-18 months while works take place.

“The site will then re-open in 2016 restored back to its former glory with heated water for the pool, new meeting room space, an all year round cafe and bar as well as a new gym and outside recreational spaces including beach volleyball.”

Saltdean Lido is the only Grade II* listed lido in the country.

It is on the English Heritage At Risk Register.

The Community Interest Company has secured a 60-year lease on the site.

The main event tomorrow will include behind the scenes tours of areas of the lido which have not been accessible to the public.

The original plant room from the 1930s and the stunning roof rotunda terraces will be open to the public.

The daytime event will showcase the CIC’s plans for the future of the building and site.

There will be heritage tours so you can have a peak behind the scenes of the lido.

Availability of these tours is limited and booking is essential.

Timed tours are available at 11.30am, 12.15pm, 1pm and 2pm.

There will be live music, tasting sessions of local drinks, hot food, a kids’ corner with activities and lots more.

Entry is free although the group is asking for an optional £1 donation (kids go free) to help towards the renovation costs, which will be appreciated.

For further information contact Rebecca Crook, Saltdean Lido CIC director, on 07971 028109. There are also two evening events (Friday and Saturday) with local breweries and vineyards showcasing 30 different sparkling wines, ales, ciders and beers, with live music.

Doors open at 6pm on both evenings with tickets priced at £7.50 and can be purchased online.

The events finish at 11.30pm. Tickets from or in Saltdean shops HR Hardware and Shoebridge Butchers.
