RETIRING postmaster and postmistress Howard and Rebecca Lilly, of Angmering Post Office, were treated to a moving presentation last week by the Angmering Society.

On their last day of trading, members of the society gathered to wish the Lillys a happy retirement and to thank them for their 22 years hard work in the community.

Presenting the couple with a bottle of champagne and a bouquet, Angmering Society chairman John Fricker gave a short speech.

"Though you are not members of the Angmering Society, unwittingly, you are, because you have engendered community spirit and we appreciate that.

"We also wish you happiness in your new-found freedom and bearing in mind the fact that you are not going to leave us, you may think of coming to a Monday meeting down at the village hall!"

A steady stream of cards and presents from well-wishers arrived throughout the day and Howard and Rebecca said they were totally overwhelmed by the kindness shown by the people of Angmering.

"We are very happy to retire, but the village has been absolutely superb and we are very grateful to everybody," said Rebecca.

The post office will now be run by Paul Ward at the Londis convenience store in the village square and he will be helped by Howard for the first few weeks of trading.
