NIGHT SPOTS could stay open for longer in a bid to improve Hastings' evening economy.

Councillors at Monday's Cabinet meeting said staggering closing times for pubs and clubs would lead to a more diverse and safer town, boosting the economy.

Some 40 percent of house hold income is spent on evening entertainment. It is estimated that 22 million is lost every year in Hastings, because of a lack of diversity in Hastings' nightlife.

Changes in liquor licensing to come in next year mean late night licensing, presently the responsibility of the magistrates courts, will soon transfer to local authorities. When this happens it seems likely councillors will give the green light to longer opening hours for late night venues.
