A WOMEN’S only cycling event, supported by Olympic gold medallist Victoria Pendleton, was launched at Plumpton Racecourse.
Representatives from Cycletta, Macmillan Cancer Support and the British Cycling initiative Breeze, were at Plumpton Racecourse on Friday, July 20, for the event.
Cycletta is a national series of women only cycling events which is coming to Plumpton for the first time on September 30.
The event comprises races of of 40km or 80km distances, catering for nervous to experienced cyclists.
An amazing 50 per cent of riders in previous events have never taken part in an event like this before.
The series aims to encourage more women to get on their bikes for fitness and fun, whilst also providing a new and exciting platform for women around the UK to raise significant sums of money for charity.
Lauren Jordan, part of the Cycling Team at official charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support said, “Macmillan Cancer Support is really excited to be a part of the first Cycletta at Plumpton Racecourse. It’s great fun to be out riding and for such a good cause.”
Abby Allen, who is the Local Champion for the Breeze network, the British Cycling initiative that works alongside Cycletta to encourage hundreds of thousands of women to start cycling, was also there to help launch the event.
She said: “It’s great to see an event specifically for women, in such a male dominated sport, so we can bridge the gap between men’s and women’s cycling.”
There is no need to have a specialist bike for the race and there will be teams around the course to help mend punctures.
Cycletta’s partner charity is Macmillan Cancer Support and it is hoping many riders will fundraise for the cancer charity, but participants will be able to raise money for other local charities as well.
The women only Cycletta cycling series was launched in 2011. Plumpton is one of seven women’s only Cycletta events taking place this year.
The 40k race costs £42 to enter, while the 80k race costs £46. To register visit www.cycletta.co.uk
