Laura's thumbing her way from Brest to Brest

An Aldwick medical student will be thumbing her way across Europe to raise money for a cancer charity.

Laura Tucker, 22, has organised a hitch hike '“ the Brest to Brest Challenge '“ over some 1,700 miles in aid of Breast Cancer Care.

She will be joined by five friends from university for the entire route and another two for most of the journey.

Their aim will be to spend as little as possible in travelling from Brest in Belarus to Brest in Brittany in France. Each will raise at least 250 for the good cause.

The challenge was inspired by the fight of Laura's mother '“ Cathy Tucker '“ against breast cancer last year.

Mrs Tucker, 50, was diagnosed in April 2008 when an aggressive tumour was caught at an early stage during a routine screening after Laura's grandmother had twice survived breast cancer.

Mrs Tucker had an operation to remove the lump and has done well after chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

Laura, of Aldwick Avenue, said: "We were able to give my mum a lot of support, but a lot of women have to get by with a much less support from their families.

"Breast Cancer Care provides that support with counselling and a helpline. They do such a good job and that's why I chose them to benefit from this event."

The challenge starts on August 7 and should take ten days. Laura estimates it covers some 1,700 miles.

"I think it will be perfectly safe hitch-hiking," she said. "Poland and Germany, which we will be passing through, are the two safest countries in Europe in which to hitch-hike.

"We will be hitching in teams of three, with a male in each team. I am a little bit nervous, but that's because I am responsible for all the organisation. I want to make sure everyone enjoys themselves."

Laura has also spoken to the organisers of a mass hitch-hike which happens annually at Sheffield University where she is about to start the fourth year of six years studying medicine.

Holidays see her working as a care assistant at Chalcraft Hall Care Home on Chalcraft Road, North Bersted.

She has set up the www.bresttobrestchallenge.co.uk website for donations.
