Learning how to learn science the fun way

A group of Bognor Regis Community College students have been shown how to use their brains to study science.

The 28 students in years 11, 12 and 13 have become the college's first science leaders. The creation of the group follows the success of the sports leaders programme at the college in helping students gain confidence and improve their communication skills.

During a two-day course, the new leaders received the latest training on how the brain understands science problems to enable them to reflect how they learnt and to help others to progress.

Fun science-based activities also showed them how they communicated with each other, worked as a team and handled practical equipment.

They also received tips from Michael Ayres Junior School science co-ordinator Paul Hutchinson about dealing with young people and managing their behaviour.

Blake Charles, 17, said: "The course showed the teachers trust us and helped build stronger team work with people on my course and in the years below."

Fellow student Lloyd Danaher, 17, stated: "It gave me a fresh perspective, from the eyes of a teacher and has made me think more carefully about how I learn."
