Lec site: work halts to await Arun's decision

OWNER of the former Lec site, Sime Darby London Ltd's managing director, Raof Daud said no more works would be undertaken until councillors decided on the plans for a Sainsbury's store on the site.

"If we don't have planning permission, the only way to do the work is to take on the risk.

"The question is '“ Do we want to do that? If we got the site ready, and then didn't get the planning, what would happen then?" he said at a small gathering of chamber of commerce members on Tuesday.

Talks are being held between Sime Darby and Sainsbury's about how the clean up of the former Lec site would take place.

Mr Daud warned the cost of the remedial work meant only a high-value occupier, such as a retailer, would be able to afford the work.

One potential source of dispute is the access from the A29 to the store.

Transport consultants hired by Sainsbury's compared five options before they suggested a traffic light junction for vehicles travelling southwards along the dual carriageway and to allow those travelling north to turn right.

This idea is being studied by county highways officials but will revive the controversy over Tesco's traffic lights idea.
