Lenten lunches have lots of appeal

A simple soup meal in Yapton got Lent underway for members of the local churches.

Mary Stirland hosted the first of this year's Lenten lunches for the congregations of St Mary's Church in Climping, St Mary's Church in Yapton and St Andrew-by-the-Ford.

She served home-made curried parsnip, leek and potato and carrot and coriander soups to 23 diners last Friday. They also tucked in to bread, cheese and fruit.

Mrs Stirland, of Church Lane, said: "It's nice for people to come together for a simple lunch like this. It's all about fellowship and helping others."

The meal was free but those taking part were asked to donate to Christian Aid's appeal to create bore holes in Bangladesh.

The amount raised will not be known after until the final lunch is held on April 3. But it is hoped 700 will be raised to enable three holes to be dug to provide water.

The lunches are in their 11th year and have so far raised 5,325.
