Let’s give Mary Memorial she deserves

Mary, aged seven, died after being shot by her father outside her home at Spring Hill, Northiam, in September, after returning from school.

The fund was set up by Mary’s family to ‘leave a lasting tribute to a special little girl.’

At the time of going to press the appeal had reached £4,275.

Part of the money raised will be donated to the local Music Well charity which uses music to help disadvantaged youngsters.

Mary loved music and was learning to play the violin at the time of her death,

Mary’s mother Lyndsey Shipstone said: “I would like to thank everyone here who have give so generously in my daughters name.”

Northiam Parish Council has got behind the campaign and the village Bonfire Society is donating part of the money raised from Saturday’s event.

Parish Clerk Sue Keighley said: “The Parish Council has set up a collection for residents to donate towards a village memorial to the tragically short life of Mary Shipstone.

“Collection boxes are sited in the Parish Office, Spar, Fish Bar, Jempsons, Wills and the D.I.Y shop.

“The intention is that the council will discuss and agree with Mary’s mother an appropriate memorial.

“If anyone wishes to donate by cheque, it should be made payable to Northiam parish Council.”

The village is still in shock over the tragic incident.

Northiam Rector, Reverend Rod White said: “Mary had a joyful brightness about her, as well as a strong-willed mischievous streak.

“I know how much her cheery life-filled presence will be missed not only by her family but also by those at her school and by our church family.”
