Lewes beauty students in national final

Three beauty therapy students from Sussex Downs College, in Lewes, have been shortlisted as finalists in the WorldSkills UK competition this autumn.

Level two beauty therapy student Rebecca West, 18, and level three students Zoe Leycester, 23, and Ellie Garrard, 19, competed at Milton Keynes college in the regional event of the competition on June 23.

The talented students were among more than 40 competitors hoping to make it through to the national finals.

Rebecca and Zoe were awarded first place (gold) in their category and Ellie third (bronze).

The top 10 scorers, including the three Sussex Downs College students, now go through to the national final of The Skills Show, which takes place November 18 – 21 at the Birmingham NEC.

Emma Hartup, curriculum leader of Beauty in Lewes, says: “This is lovely news to finish the academic year. We are extremely proud of Rebecca, Zoe and Ellie.”

Melanie Hunt, outgoing principal and chief executive of Sussex Downs College, added: “This is fantastic news and very well deserved. It truly reflects the high quality work and dedication of the beauty department.”

The Skills Show, the nation’s largest skills and careers event, is helping to shape the future of the next generation.

Attracting 75,000 visitors, the show provides hands-on experiences that inspire young people to explore further education, skills and apprenticeships.

The Skills Show is part of Find a Future, the organisation that brings together the nation’s flagship skills and careers experiences.
