LEWES BUSINESSES FOOT AND MOUTH HELP

Small businesses in the Lewes district which have suffered as a result of the foot and mouth crisis could be eligible for financial aid from the council.

Businesses with a rateable value of 12,000 or less are now able to apply to Lewes District Council for a full rate rebate for the three month period of April to June 2001, providing they can show that they have suffered serious economic loss through the impact of foot and mouth disease.

The scheme will allow impacts beyond three months to be kept under review.

The government will underwrite 95 per cent of the council s costs in operating this scheme.

Businesses with properties above 12,000 rateable value affected by foot and mouth disease should also contact the council so that help can be considered with rescheduling rate instalments.

In addition businesses in the areas considering appeals against their business rate valuation whether because of foot and mouth, the 2000 revaluation or another reason, will have an additional period ending on June 30 in which to make such an appeal to the district valuer.
