Lewes District Council announces new leader

A new Leader of Lewes District Council was announced at a full council meeting yesterday (Wednesday, October 14).

Former Acting Leader, Councillor Andy Smith, was elected as the new Leader and Chair of Cabinet at the meeting.

Councillor Elayne Merry is now Deputy Leader and Councillor Bill Giles is now the Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources. The remaining places on Cabinet remain unchanged.

Councillor Smith said: “I look forward to making a fresh start as Leader, taking an inclusive approach to leading the Council and working productively with opposition councillors.

“I hope this will be a period of stability, when we will be getting on with business as usual. We have great people working for us and we are dedicated to delivering a high quality service to our residents.”

Councillor Andy Smith was formerly Deputy Leader of the Council. On September 21, he became the Acting Leader following the resignation of Councillor Rob Blackman.

The Cabinet membership is as follows:

- Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Enterprise and Partnerships - Councillor Andy Smith (Leader of the Council and Chair of Cabinet).

- Cabinet Member for People and Performance - Councillor Elayne Merry (Deputy Leader).

- Cabinet Member for Finance and Resources - Councillor Bill Giles.

- Cabinet Member for Environment - Councillor Paul Franklin.

- Cabinet Member for Planning - Councillor Tom Jones.

- Cabinet Member for Housing - Councillor Ron Maskell.
