Lewes MP Maria Caulfield will join Parliament's newly formed Brexit select committee.

The select committee, which is officially known as the Exiting the European Union Committee, will oversee and hold to account the actions taken by the Government's Brexit secretary David Davies.

The 21-member committee is made up of ten Conservative MPs, five Labour MPs and two SNP MPs while the Lib Dems, the Democratic Unionist Party, the SDLP, and Plaid Cymru will each chose one member. It will be chaired by the former Labour shadow foreign secretary Hilary Benn.

Responding to the appointment, Ms Caulfield said: “I am delighted to have been elected to this important committee by my colleagues. It is no secret that I supported Britain’s exiting the European Union. I am however also aware of the fact that a large number of my constituents voted to remain, and it is important that their concerns are properly taken into consideration.

“I put myself forward for this role so that I was in the best possible position to ensure that the voice of my constituents is heard as the Government orchestrates Britain’s exit from the EU, and I will ensure that this remains the case going forward.”

Other notable appointments to the committee are the former Justice Secretary Michael Gove and the former Culture Secretary John Whittingdale - who both campaigned to leave the EU. In all, eight of the ten Conservative MPs sitting on the committee supported a Brexit vote in the referendum.

Labour has elected five members to the committee including Mr Benn. They all backed the remain campaign as did the committee members from the smaller parties.
