Lewes panto stars thwart King Rat

The Lewes Arms Dramatic Society (LADS) took to the boards last week when they presented their 36th annual adult pantomime.

This year’s production, Dick Whittington, played to enthusiastic audiences over six nights at The Lewes Arms and the production raised more than £1,700 for the Sasha Roberts Scholarship Fund and St Peter and St James Hospice at Chailey.

As is traditional, the LADS stamped their topical mark on a well-known pantomime tale and this year’s action was set in the post-Olympic wasteland of London in the year 2019.

As the Mayor attempted to build an airport on the former stadium site, its current occupant, King Rat, made evil plans to take over the world assisted by his henchmen.

Meanwhile, Dick Whittington, his cat Fluffy and the lovely Alice Fitzwarren braved various nefarious plots, including a Zombie Apocalypse, and many groan-worthy jokes as they attempted to live Happily Ever After.

By complete contrast, it has been nearly three years since the Kantanti Ensemble first brought their combination of young professional players and international soloists to Sussex, but the excitement surrounding their forthcoming Concerto Gala in Lewes promises to trump all of the orchestra’s achievements to date.

Director, Lee Reynolds said: “Never before have we had such a stellar line-up of soloists to offer. It’s not often that you get to hear musicians at the very top of the industry playing on your doorstep.”

Reynolds, who grew up in Lewes, continued: “Clarinettist Lorenzo Iosco and viola player Lander Echevarria, from Italy and Spain respectively, perform day-to-day with the LSO, and are coming to Lewes to perform Max Bruch‘s Double Concerto together.

“Representing the United States, Paul Austin Kelly will be singing some really breath-taking songs by Richard Strauss. And as if that wasn’t enough, the home-grown talent will be cellist Jamie Walton.”

The Kantanti Ensemble and guest soloists will be performing their Concerto Gala at St John Sub Castro, Lewes, at 4pm on March 17. Tickets and full information on the event can be found at www.kantanti.com
