A Lewes property developer has made a bid for the St Anne’s School site in Lewes after contract negotiations with SUBUD Britain fell through last week.
Philip Gorringe has been in contact with East Sussex County Council regarding the acquisition of the site for a number of months - even before the deal with SUBUD was terminated.
In a letter to East Sussex County Council on March 7, 2016, Mr Gorringe said: “My interest remains whereby I would, subject to contract and planning, be prepared to pay the valuation of £3.5m to provide the young people of Lewes with affordable housing at affordable mortgages.”
In another letter on April 20, after hearing news of the break-down in negotiations between the council and SUBUD, Mr Gorringe said he hoped his offer for the freehold of the site for £2m, subject only to contract, would still be considered.
An East Sussex County Council spokesperson said: “The county council will now be reviewing options for the future use and development of the site before determining a new way forward. SUBUD Britain will retain its existing presence in Lewes and continue to offer and develop community facilities and services.”
