Lib Dems lead warm tributes to '˜kind-hearted' councillor

Tributes have been paid to a popular and kind-hearted choral member, church elder and former Liberal Democrat parish councillor who has died at the age of 74.

Christine Page lived in Lewes for many years while working as a teacher at Lindfield Primary School, and also campaigned for former Lewes MP and fellow Lib Dem, Norman Baker.

Christine lived in Sussex all her life and worked as a primary school teacher for around 30 years.

She moved to Willingdon as a teenager and went to Bexhill Grammar School. Following her teacher training, she moved to Lewes.

Moving back to Willingdon in the mid 1990s, Christine joined the local Liberal Democrat team.

She was elected to Willingdon and Jevington Parish Council in May 2003 and served on that council until 2007, during which time she chaired the amenities committee.

Christine was a long time governor of Willingdon Primary School and served as the tree warden for the parish from 2003 until her death.

Former Lib Dem MP Stephen Lloyd said: “Everything she did, she did with integrity and kindness. A great lass, our Christine. She left her mark in the sand.”

Willingdon and Jevington parish councillor, Andy Watkins, described Christine as ‘an excellent colleague’ and said he always valued her knowledge and contribution.

He added: “She will be missed.”

Christine leaves her two younger sisters Jenny Potter and Heather Page. She also has a step-brother Clive Page.

Jenny said: “She was a Sussex girl through and through and her two loves were the countryside and singing - it gave her such joy.”

Christine masterminded and was passionate about Phoenix Choir.

Chris Howden, choir member, said: “She was an invaluable member of the choir and firm friend to many. She will be greatly missed.”

Christine went to Sunday school at Trinity Church in Coppice Avenue, Willingdon, before becoming a Sunday school teacher and then being ordained as a church elder in 2002. She was also involved in flower arranging at the church.

The funeral will take place at the church at noon on Friday, May 13.
