Lib Dem's rail survey

BEXILL and Battle Liberal Democrats have released the findings of a survey conducted at a number of local railway stations last month.

The Lib Dem's survey, which was carried out at Crowhurst, Battle, Robertsbridge, Etchingham and Stonegate, was directed at Nation Rail's proposed cuts to the Hastings to London's Cannon Street direct service.

Network Rail has outlined plans to withdraw all direct trains from Hastings to Cannon Street by 2015 in the recently released Kent Route Utilisation Study (RUS).

Survey forms are still being received but to date 77% of the forms returned show an inclination to either move house or to use the car to get to work, confirming widespread fears that the cuts will be detrimental to the areas economy.

Mary Varrall Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for Bexhill and Battle said:

"These figures confirm our worst fears. The withdrawal of the direct Cannon Street service is a threat not only to the sustainability of the communities served by these stations but also to the environment if there are to be more car journeys on our already crowded local roads."
