Licence dodgers caught in Chichester district and Bognor Regis

MORE than 230 people across Chichester were caught without a valid television licence last year.

The figures, released by TV Licensing, showed in Bognor Regis the number was slightly higher at 270.

They were among 2,500 caught in West Sussex.

The penalty for not having a licence is a fine of up to £1,000, plus court costs and a victim surcharge.

Anyone found guilty is also required to buy a licence which costs £145.50 if they still need one or they could face a second prosecution.

The agency said a licence was needed to watch television whatever device was used, which included smart phones, tablets, laptops and computers.
