Life sentences for owners of killer dogs could cut attacks

Senior animal rescue officer Billy Elliott, of animal charity WADARS, believes tougher sentences would help tackle a growing problem of dog attacks.

He said: “It seems a bit extreme, but then people need to realise that a dog’s behaviour is the responsibility of its owner.

“They say bullets don’t go around corners, but a dog will. It’s a serious problem.”

The proposal, which is currently out for public consultation, was put forward by Lord de Mauley, following an increasing number of deaths caused by dogs in recent years.

If it gains enough support, the law could be changed.

Currently, owners of dogs which kill or injure people are only eligible for maximum prison terms of two years.

Mr Elliott said a recent dog attack he dealt with was a perfect example of the need for owners to be more in control of their pets.

He said: “A couple of weeks ago, a woman was walking her dog, and another one, off a lead, came rushing off the beach and attacked her dog.
