PLANS are taking shape for the biggest and best Lions summer weekend event yet in Uckfield as it will double as a celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee.

Letters about the event were sent out to town organisations about six weeks ago and already 15 stalls have been booked. A final total of 60-70 stalls are expected with the number 20 per cent up on last year.

Lions vice-president Bob Eaves said the fun traditionally started on the Friday evening, this time May 31, with a wine tasting session at the Holy Cross Centre. A mobile diabetes testing centre will be stationed in the High Street throughout Saturday and a quiz will be held that evening at the Luxford Centre.

Then on the Sunday, June 2, a wide range of attractions have been booked as ring events on the Luxford Field from salsa dancing and the Heathfield School of Dancing to the annual tug of war contest.

Uckfield Scout Band is due to play, there will be a display of historic motor vehicles different from those on show last year and there will be a car boot sale and a variety of stalls and side shows.

Mr Eaves reckoned more than 7,000 was raised for local charities last year. But, he said, the main thing was for people to come down, enjoy themselves, have a good time and hear about the Lions Club and all the other organisations represented.

Anybody interested in booking space at the event is invited to contact Mr Eaves on 01825-764638.
