Little Common library triumph

THE success of a dramatic rescue was celebrated this week.

Just over a year ago Little Common Library was itself on borrowed time. It seemed inevitable that the final rubber stamp would be put on its record.

But the community rallied to the call and when the county council pulled out of Little Common Community Centre, volunteers moved in.

This week the do-it-yourself community library celebrated its first anniversary with an open day.

Guests included town MP Gregory Barker and Colonel Mohammad Al Saadi, deputy project manager at the nearby United Arab Emirates' technical training centre.

They were able to see not only a packed centre but new mobile book shelving bought with the 10,000 grant given by the UAE.

Percy Pearson, chairman of the volunteers who now run the library, said of the shelving units: "They are brilliant, absolutely brilliant.

"For a start they hold more books than the old shelves, which is good because we now have more books."
