Little Common's own Farmers' Market

Little Common's own Farmers' Market has got off to a flying start. The first of a regular series of monthly markets in St Martha's Church Hall last Thursday drew a large following - despite the inevitable Summer 2007 rain.

Parking was hard to find in the Birk Dale area as the public responded to the appeal of fresh local produce.

Strawberries and other summer fruits were much in demand but there was also steady trade at other stalls including locally-baked pies and rolls.

Outside, keen gardeners ignored the weather to queue at the plant stall.

Market organiser Cllr Stuart Wood was delighted at the attendance.

He set up a pilot series of monthly markets at St Martha's to assess the demand, acting in response to requests from the public following the success of Bexhill's monthly Farmers' Market in Parkhurst Hall.

Now he has secured a regular monthly booking for the hall.

At the Little Common Market, he said: "We have had a wonderful steady flow of people so far. I saw a stream of people walking towards here. I am sure the market will bring trade to Little Common.

"It's great.

"We have had a lot of people saying 'When's it going to start?' There was some confusion after the pilot series. But I am sure it is going to be very successful.

"We have all the regular stallholders from the Bexhill Farmers' Market here but two who couldn't come."
