Little Gate Farm launches projects for people with learning difficulties

Little Gate Farm, a care farming project in Beckley, is starting two projects to help those with learning difficulties by spending time on the farm and learning skills while helping out.

An eight-week pilot project is starting for adults with mild to moderate learning difficulties who want to work outside in the woods and learn skills that will enable them to work. This is a fully funded pilot through European social fund starting in February 2015 to support vulnerable adults who want to learn new skills and be part of a small supportive team. Adults will be offered travel training out to the farm and public transport costs and uniform are covered. Activities will include: hedge laying, firewood production, woodland conservation, and woodland first aid training, round wood timber framing, fencing and rustic furniture making.

Additionally they are inviting children with additional needs from mainstream and special schools to attend a four-week weekend workshop starting in February-March 2015.

Eight younger children 8-12yrs are invited on the Saturdays and eight older children 12-16yrs on the Sundays. Activities will include: Being a farmer for the day, making craft, feeding the animals, cooking and games. This pilot project in funded through ESCC Spark award and is for children to enjoy nature and care for farm animals, including new born lambs and chicks, and learning about where food comes from.
