The triumph in the train operator’s Stars and Tsars annual awards came from a panel of judges of Southern service managers and directors and members of the Southern stakeholder advisory board.

Their decision has given the railway staff at both sites £1,000 to spend on a project to benefit passengers as well as cash for staff to enjoy.

Southern’s managing director Chris Burchell, said: “It was a tough task for our judges as they toured the finalist stations. Unannounced, they peered into every nook and cranny and left no stone or timetable unturned in their search for the best Southern has to offer”

He added that the awards were presented to the stations that consistently provided “excellent” customer service and facilities and go the “extra mile” to try to make every trip with the network a pleasurable one.
