Littlehampton anti-development campaign steps up

CAMPAIGNERS against plans for 600 new homes on farmland on the outskirts of Littlehampton are holding another public meeting tomorrow (Saturday, January 8).

More than 100 people attended a similar meeting organised by the town’s MP Nick Gibb and the Courtwick Lane Opposition Group (CLOG) last month and organisers hope tomorrow’s attendance will be even greater.

Developers Gleeson have submitted outline plans to Arun District Council for the housing, and for business development, with access off the A259 between the Tesco and Lyminster Road roundabouts.

CLOG says the new homes would add about 1,800 extra residents and 1,200 additional cars to the area, placing an “intolerable burden on the resources of Littlehampton”.

The group has also raised concerns about the loss of prime arable farmland, building on the River Arun flood plain, the impact on “one of the finest local views of Arundel” and the harmful effect on roads and other infrastructure around the Courtwick area and elsewhere in Littlehampton.

Supporters of the Courtwick scheme say Littlehampton badly needs more affordable family housing and the development will help to secure contributions to improvements to the area’s infrastructure, possibly including funding for a Lyminster bypass.

Mr Gibb will again be attending the meeting, at Wick Hall, Wick Street, at 11am.
