Michelle’s lecturer, Anne-Marie Stewart, received £250 and a trophy, while Chichester College was awarded £1,000.

June Brent, of the college’s hair and beauty department, said: “Michelle has really done us proud. To be top in such a prestigious, national competition is an outstanding achievement, and as a college we will bask in the glory of having trained the winning Student of the Year 2011!”

Judges praised Michelle, an HND Level 5 student, for her confidence and technical skills. One judge said, “Even though the standard of competition was exceptionally high this year, the winner particularly stood out as she completed the treatment with such ease, confidence and technical skill.”

Michelle said, “The competition has reinforced my belief that I can do electrotherapy. I plan to spend the money setting up my own business once I’ve finished my course.

“I already feel very confident working with clients and I have even found a job in a beauty salon.”
