Littlehampton fish kiosk is hoisted into the air by Environment Agency

THIS is the moment on-lookers gathered to see whether a fish kiosk in Littlehampton would fall to pieces when it was hoisted into the air and moved by the Environment Agency.

The four and a half tonne shop, Riverside Fish, was lifted into the air last Wednesday so that it could be moved while the Environment Agency carries out flood defence work on the river bank.

But thankfully for its owner, Robert Brooks, the shop, which sells fresh fish brought in via Littlehampton port, remained in tact as it was transported 130 feet to its new home.

Mr Brooks said: “The popular thought was that it was going to fall apart when it was lifted up.

“I was very worried because there’s three jobs tied up with the shop and we didn’t know if it was going to be OK.

“But when we saw it in the air for a few minutes we suddenly felt relieved and thought ‘it’s going to be OK’.”

The shop was being moved from its previous home near to where Pier Road and Arun Parade meet – where it was based for four and a half years – to Pier Road by the oyster pond in front of the Nelson Hotel.

Riverside Fish will be based at its new home until May, after which it will return to its previous location.

It re-opened on Tuesday.

Mr Brooks said the new location was not as good as Riverside Fish’s previous home, as fishermen had been able to moor their boats virtually in front of the shop.
