Other surgeries had opened on New Year’s day and in the first weekend of January.

This action came after Worthing Hospital and St Richard’s Hospital, Chiches-ter were put on ‘black alert’ because bed capacity had been reached. GPs saw 360 extra people over the weekend.

A spokeswoman for the Clinical Commissioning Group said: “The CCG is working with all health partners to try and ensure everyone is treated quickly and appropriately – and has decided to try something new.”
