Littlehampton group boosts community relationships

A community project set up in Littlehampton to foster better relations with people from ethnic backgrounds is seeking new recruits.

The Littlehampton Town Wards and District Neighbourhood Watch Association (LTWDNWA) held a stall at the town’s weekly market, on Friday (November 16), to promote initiatives aimed at encouraging more people of ethnic backgrounds to engage with the local community.

Organisers say that more than 100 people showed interest at the stall, which was displaying information on two of the group’s flagship initiatives.

Project Unity was set up by the association in September, with the goal of providing Littlehampton’s ethnic minorities with more of a voice in how the town changes.

It was initially started in River ward, but following grant support totalling around £7,000, from the National Lottery and River Ward Community Fund, the scheme has since been rolled out across neighbouring Beach and Ham wards.

Mike Cullern, chairman of the LTWDNWA, said: “There have been problems socially and economically within the wards. All three are areas of deprivation. We’re just trying to improve the social structure for future residents of the wards.”

Members of the group are also taking part in Operation Stub it – Bin it, a joint venture with West Sussex Fire and Rescue aimed at reducing the number of blazes related to carelessly discarded cigarette butts.

The association’s next meeting is on Wednesday, December 5, at the Dairy Community Centre, in East Street, at 7.30pm. It will also have a stall at Littlehampton Market on Friday, December 21, which will provide information about the work the group is doing in the town.
