PLANS for a substantial new warehouse/office building at Poling have been submitted by a horticulture business forced to relocate from its present site because of the North Littlehampton development.

Fargro Ltd, the largest horticultural wholesale supplier in the south-east, hopes to move from its Toddington Lane base to land south of The Vinery, near the A27.

The company looked at 20 possible sites before settling on Poling. Staying close to Littlehampton was a major factor for Fargro, with the bulk of its 57-strong workforce living in the town, it said.

The proposed move was announced in October, as the Gazette reported at the time, and now a planning application for a 6,400 sq m warehouse with offices and 5,400 m2 of dry storage area has been submitted to Arun District Council.

The application includes extensive landscaping, environmental and ecological improvements, as well as better access to The Vinery industrial estate from the A27.

An additional benefit for people living adjacent to the site is the rerouting of existing delivery vehicles, which currently pass their properties, providing a quieter and safer environment.

Fargro spokesman Steve Carey said: “Location is an important factor in Fargro’s success. Not only are we a local firm providing to local growers but the vast majority of our staff live locally too.

“Keeping such an experienced team together is not only important to our business but also to the growers we supply.”

No one from the Poling Parish Meeting was available to comment on the plans.
