Littlehampton Hospital campaigner ‘will always be remembered’

LITTLEHAMPTON Hospital campaigner Bob McDowall, who helped to collect thousands of signatures on letters calling for the hospital’s rebuilding, has died, just weeks after the scheme was finally axed.

Using a scooter supplied by Littlehampton Shopmobility, Bob travelled far and wide to win people’s support, and travelled to Downing Street when the letters were handed in by the campaigners in December.

Bob, who was helped by his friends Millie and Fred Harman, from Arundel, also joined lobbies of NHS Sussex when the hospital’s future was being discussed at its board meetings.

Arun District Council leader Gillian Brown said: “Bob had a tireless enthusiasm for fighting for what was right and embraced the Give Us Our Hospital campaign with a real passion.

“I’ll always remember our trip to Downing Street in December and how delighted Bob was to be able to ‘take the message to the top’, as he described it.

“He was a lovely man and our campaign simply wouldn’t have been the same without him.

“He was disappointed by last month’s decision but had already pledged to fight on with us. We will miss him.”

Littlehampton mayor Alan Gammon said: “Bob was passionate about the community and stuck up for what he felt was right. He worked tirelessly with his friends through the hospital campaign and was unstoppable when it came to collecting names for our protest letters, gathering more than 5,000 signatures by himself.

“Our campaign was better for having him involved in it. He is a sad loss but will always be remembered.”
