Littlehampton ladies celebrate 300 years between them

Dorothy Searl, a resident at Oakland Grange residential care home, celebrated her 100th birthday with a party including family, friends and care home staff and residents.

Dorothy is now the third 100-year-old at the Littlehampton home, joining fellow centenarians Violet Burch and Lottie Pottinger.

Manager Gemma Munday said Dorothy, Violet and Lottie were ‘an inspiration to us all’. “Oakland Grange Care Home is registered for 42 residents and we are proud and delighted we now have three residents aged 100 and over,” said Gemma. “These residents are an inspiration to us all with their determination and vitality which has a positive impact on everyone including visitors who come into the home.

“It is marvellous to hear about the changes they have seen in their lives and the interest they still have in the world around them.”

Born in Ealing, London, Dorothy has lived at the care home since April 2011.

Having discovered she had a flair for numbers at an early age, she worked in a factory as an administrative assistant calculating figures until she met her husband Ted.

Dorothy was happily married to Ted and when he retired they moved to Sussex to be near the sea. Dorothy said she has always been a ‘keen follower’ of the Royal Family so was thrilled to receive her telegram from the Queen.
