The two 35ft vessels were on their way from Brighton to Chichester, on Saturday evening (February 21), when the emergency unfurled, eight miles from the town’s harbour entrance.

One of the ships had been towing the other, which had suffered an engine failure, when it became snagged in the fishing gear.

An RNLI team from the Littlehampton lifeboat station, in Fisherman’s Quay, was dispatched, alongside another team from Selsey, to rescue the stricken yacht crews.

The team from Selsey went about attempting to free the snared yacht while the Littlehampton team, in Atlantic 75 Blue Peter 1, attached tow lines yachts.

Both ships were eventually towed back to Littlehampton harbour, with the three crew members of the yachts being given warm drinks inside the boathouse.

No-one was hurt in the incident.
