Littlehampton Lions’ pride in money-spinning model

PEDALLING pioneers who came up with a novel way of fund-raising for charity have shared out the proceeds of their latest money-spinning event.

Cycle for Youth was launched by Littlehampton District Lions’ Club six years ago and has generated almost £30,000 for good causes since then.

Teams are sponsored to ride exercise bikes for 24 hours and the Littlehampton model has now been adopted by other Lions clubs across the south-east.

Littlehampton Lions held their presentation evening for the 2011 Cycle for Youth at Princess Marina House, Rustington, at the end of last month, to thank major sponsors and hand out cheques to the main beneficiaries.

Denise Thornton received a cheque for £2,000 on behalf of Chestnut Tree House children’s hospice and members of Luke Cory’s family received a cheque for £1,750 for the Luke Cory Trust, set up in memory of their son, who died very young from a rare form of leukaemia.

Lion Dean Jones, who had the original idea for the event, handed out the cheques with club president Keith Mates.

Fitness instructor Paul Cushway was presented with a certificate of appreciation for forming a team and riding in each of the events, and another certificate was presented to Trevor Blaskett for his outstanding contribution. The challenge cup for the most raised went to the Luke Cory Trust.

The evening finished with a wine tasting arranged by Majestic Wines and president Keith thanked all those who attended and Lion Yvette Chan-a-Sue, who organised the evening.
