Littlehampton man nominated as Olympic torchbearer

OLYMPIC dreams might come true for the former owner of the David O. Jones sports shop in Littlehampton, following his nomination as an Olympic torchbearer.

Tyndall Jones has been put forward for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity by friend, Angie Browne, of St Mary’s Close, Littlehampton.

Angie said: “Tyndall should be nominated for his stalwart dedication to our community.

“He is always at the forefront of collectors at many charity events in Littlehampton. He is a quiet, unassuming man and has been a linchpin for the town’s Shopwatch – Littlehampton is indeed a happier and safer place because of him.”

Tyndall is no stranger when it comes to being at the forefront of large, sporting events, having been selected as one of the country’s 2002 Commonwealth Games baton holders.

However, when he was told about his nomination as an Olympic torchbearer, 62-year-old Tyndall was “astounded” by the revelation.

He said: “I was completely gobsmacked. I remembered thinking to myself that there must have been more worthy people in Littlehampton to be nominated.

“I feel honoured to be nominated. It would be a very very memorable occasion for me if I was selected as one of the torch carriers, an occasion which I would never forget.”

The London 2012 torch is a three-sided, golden cone that will be carried by roughly 8,000 torchbearers over a 70-day period.

Beginning at Land’s End on May 19, next year, the torch will then travel a total of 8,000 miles before arriving at the Olympic Stadium on July 27 for the official opening ceremony.

“To run the Commonwealth baton was a real honour,” said Tyndall. “But to do something like the Olympics would just eclipse it.”

Tyndall will discover his fate with thousands of other hopefuls across the country when the successful torchbearers are announced, later next month.
