Bognor Regis and Littlehampton MP Nick Gibb has called on councillors of all political parties to join together and back the lower target at the authority’s next full council meeting, on Wednesday, when the recommendation for the lower housing figures of Arun’s local plan will be agreed upon.

Mr Gibb voiced his concern over the housing development numbers in the district in a statement released on Wednesday (May 22) in which he claimed the area could not cope with any more large-scale schemes, arguing that too many building developments had taken place over the past decade.

Mr Gibb said: “My very strong view is that Arun should adopt the lower house building target of 425 houses per year rather than the unsustainable and environmentally damaging 585 houses per year that officers are proposing.

“This area has had too much house building over the last ten years and we really cannot cope with further large-scale house building.

“Any new schemes should be small scale and in line with the views of local parishes and local people.”

He added that on Thursday, June 6, he would be meeting housing minister, Nick Boles MP, together with Arun council leader Gill Brown and Arundel and South Downs MP, Nick Herbert, to explain why a target higher than 425 would be “unacceptable” for the district as a whole.
