Littlehampton pauses to remember the brave

More than two hundred people gathered at Littlehampton's war memorial on Armistice Day at 11am as people across the country fell silent to remember and honour those who sacrificed themselves to secure and protect our freedom.

The event, held on Friday, November 11, welcomed members of the Royal British Legion, the Royal Naval Association and the Royal Air Force Association.

Arun District Council’s chairman councillor Stephen Haymes was joined by Nick Gibb MP, mayor of Littlehampton councillor Ian Buckland, chief executive of Arun District Council Nigel Lynn, members of the public and school children from River Beach Primary School and St Catherine’s Catholic Primary School.

The service was conducted by Father Roger Caswell, of St Mary’s Church, Littlehampton. Derek Moore from the Royal British Legion delivered the Exhortation and Arun District Council officer Steve Arnell provided the haunting bugle sound of the Last Post and Reveille.

Councillor Haymes said: “I would like to thank everyone who participated in the Armistice Day service and in the many services on Remembrance Sunday.

“It was especially encouraging to see so many local children in attendance. It is quite something to know that citizens countrywide stop to mark the two minutes silence each year to show their respect for the brave men and women who have served in both past and present conflicts.”

There was also a service in Rustington on Sunday for Remembrance Day.

Carole Ward, clerk of Rustington Parish Council praised ‘yet another amazing turnout from the local community and visitors 
alike’.

She added: “I would estimate that there were in excess of 2,500 people gathered in The Street at the War Memorial for the Remembrance Service.”
