Littlehampton pupils quiz the education minister

Children from River Beach Primary School’s school council paid a visit to the House of Commons on Monday and met minister Nick Gibb, MP for Bognor Regis and Littlehampton.

The 24 youngsters, all from years two to six, were taking part in the Commons Education Programme.

And to round off their visit to the capital, the pupils had a 15-minute question and answer session with the MP.

Speaking of the day to the Gazette, Mr Gibb said: “We had a fruitful and interesting discussion about the work of an MP. We discussed how MPs are elected, their work in the constituency and how they can help young people of their age.

“The visit introduced the River Beach school council to the workings of our democracy and how the laws of the land are made.”

Mr Gibb added: “I thought all the young people I met were conscientious and engaged in the discussion, with a range of interesting questions to ask and points to make. They were a credit to River Beach Primary School.”

Sue Bingham, of the school, said the children had a great time on the trip, aimed at giving pupils a better understanding of democracy.

“They were quite in awe of meeting Mr Gibb because they were prepped by the tour guides who told them how lucky they were to be able to meet him.”
