Littlehampton railway celebrations on track to impress

On Saturday (August 31), the town will come alive with railway revelry to mark the special occasion.

The event, funded by Littlehampton Town Council and supported by train operator Southern, the Sussex Community Rail Partnership and Littlehampton Traders’ Partnership, will see a range of activities taking place at the railway station, in Terminus Road, and in the town centre.

Festivities begin at 11am, with a performance from the Littlehampton Concert Band and the Littlehampton Nautical Training Corps’ band, in High Street.

A range of mechanical wonders will be pulling into town, too, with the steam locomotive 672 Fenchurch, in Clifton Road, and a static display of steam engines from the Worthing & District Society of Model Engineers, a Gaugemaster stand, Punch and Judy shows, vintage games and a children’s ride, all in High Street.

There will be a model railway display at Littlehampton United Church, in High Street, and a craft and art fair at Hunnies, in Clifton Road.

Activities are also planned at the Manor House and the museum, in Church Street, including story telling, a treasure hunt, and a chance to win £50.

Chairman of the town council’s community resources committee, Malcolm Belchamber, said: “Littlehampton changed forever when the railway station opened in 1863 and this event marks the special link between the railway, residents and the many visitors that have since flocked to our town.”
