An audience almost 200-strong watched the cast of 66, aged from four to 18, at the summer show staged by Littlehampton Razzamataz in the Littlehampton Academy main hall on Saturday (July 6).

Telling the story of a grand-dad’s life from the 1940s to the present day, through song, dance and drama, the show mixed poignancy and humour with high energy and pure emotion.

Tables were set out, cabaret-style, for families to enjoy the entertainment in a relaxed atmosphere.

Jeanette Bowman, Littlehampton Razzamataz principal, said: “The show went really well and all the children worked hard and produced an excellent depiction of grand-dad’s life.

“We had some solo acts who won our talent contest last term and Lewis Bentley, Lily Cornford, Rebecca Holland and Anna Mantle all showed us why they were winners.”

Lewis and Abi Refoy, who was also in the show, both won scholarships with the group last year and played the parts of Romeo and Juliet when Littlehampton Razzamataz took its own version of Shakespeare’s love story to a special production at a West End theatre last autumn.

And now Littlehampton Razzamataz is launching another scholarship, this time in partnership with The Stage newspaper, giving one youngster, either from within the group or a complete newcomer, a year’s free attendance, with all fees paid.

“We are looking for raw talent, so it really doesn’t matter if you have not taken part in any performing arts classes before,” said Jeanette.

“Very much like the X Factor, we can spot the potential in youngsters and know that, with training from our highly experienced teachers, these young people can acquire the skills they need to progress in the performing arts.”

The scholarship will last for one year, starting from the autumn term.

To ensure as many youngsters can enter as possible, Razzamataz Littlehampton has created a scholarship system where students film a short demo of no more than two minutes showing them performing either a musical theatre song and dance, commercial dance (hip hop or street), pop song, drama improvisation or scripted drama piece.

The demo does not have to be professionally filmed. Applicants will also complete a short application form detailing why they would like to take this opportunity.

The potential winner will also have to show dedication to the performing arts. “Applicants will need to demonstrate a maturity and a real desire to learn,” added Jeanette. “We want to ensure that the scholarship place goes to a candidate who will grab the opportunity with both hands and take full advantage of it.”

To take part in the scholarship auditions or for further information about joining Razzamataz, contact Jeanette for more details and an application form by telephone 01903 788278 or mobile 07872 620907. Deadline for submissions is Saturday, July 20.
