Littlehampton schoolchildren in bloom

LITTLE green fingers have been plotting and potting to create a colourful display.

Members of Wickbourne Infant School's Garden Club helped put the finishing touches to the Littlehampton War Memorial flower beds, with their own designs.

Sue Richards, secretary at the school, said the group of five year 1 and year 2 pupils had been given the chance after winning a competition set by Arun District Council, as part of Littlehampton in Bloom.

"They were really pleased to have won, and very excited about helping to plant the bed," she said.

"They were shown how to take the plants from their pots, and got involved in putting them in."

Their design incorporated a boat and a red and white lighthouse, with blue flowers for the sea, and was created using flowers grown at Ford Prison.

District councillor Paul Wotherspoon said: "It is lovely to see our younger residents getting involved in activities that make the district brighter and more attractive.

"This sort of event, and the many others that will be happening in the weeks leading up to the In Bloom judging, all help to foster a real sense of community spirit."

Littlehampton in Bloom will be judged on July 7. Anyone who would like to take part should telephone 01903 737960.
